I made the mistake of 'upgrading' to IE 6 and the installation modified Outlook Express's character set support so that Outlook could only display email messages using certain character sets (not Netscape Mail among others). Getting out of the mire meant going back to IE 5.5 among other things.
Now every time I try to view a Viewpoint document IE crashes with errors indicating that virgo......dll is the culprit. I've tried reinstalling IE 5.5 and the Viewpoint player but still cannot view any viewpoint content without crashing IE 5.5.

Just checked and Netscape 4.7 also crashes whenever I try to play any Viewpoint file. So if anyone uninstalls IE 6 to go back to IE 5.5 your Viewpoint experience is broken throughout. And when trying to reinstall the Viewpoint player everythjing crashes again.

Not sure why you had problems upgrading
from IE5.5 to IE6. I've done exactly
the same thing (with Win2K) and have no
problems with Outlook Express or Netscape.

As to your problem, virgo.....dll sounds
very much like it's Atmosphere related
to me. Have you installed that too? I
didn't actually get around to installing
atmosphere yet but I'm pretty positive
that a file called virgo.dll would be
part of it.

If I was in your situation this is what
I would do (assuming C: is your sys drive):

Close all IE instances.
Uninstall Viewpoint player.
Uninstall Atmosphere.
Delete c:\Program Files\MetaStream
Reboot.
Over install IE5.5 again.
Reboot.
Then go about trying to re-install
VMP.

Don't take this as "the solution" to
your problem. It's just what I would
be trying in your situation.

You may also try those Windows update
and system integrity tools that started
appearing around Win98 SE time that
check for corrupted important files.

If that doesn't help, huge quantities of
money, or perhaps just asking nicely, will
persuade me to try uninstalling IE6 to see
if I get the same. But considering I don't
have any dll's that start with "virgo" on
my c: drive it's hard to imagine it would.

I do have Adobe's Enviroment product installed. But the solution that finally works is similar to what you recommend. Download Viewpoint full install locally. Shut down all browsers. Uninstall metastream and manually delete the entire subdirectory under windows. Then reinstall the Viewpoint Player. It works. Not sure why.

Thank you for responding so quickly. Good luck.
