for vrml try blaxxun or cortona, there is quite a bit of effort to get interactivitiy and I find vrml slow..java3d or vrml in a java applet may be preferable

for straight architectural environments vrml or shockwave is ok
for single interactive objects or buildings with a high polygon count use viewpoint
for multi-object environments with good lighting and avatars i suggest atmosphere
